FNA lumps this species in a broad concept of Juncus marginatus Rostk. However, Knapp and Naczi (2008, Syst. Bot. 33(4): 685–694) found them distinct in morphometric analysis, although each exhibited fairly wide morphological variability.
Habitat
Various open, moist to seasonally flooded habitats, including interdune swales, freshwater and oligohaline tidal marshes, wet meadows, low fields, and ditches. Frequent in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; infrequent to rare in the mountains.
