The capsules of E. americanum ssp. americanum are not always "held well off the ground," as stated in many manuals; and they may also be truncate at the tip, suggesting E. umbilicatum ssp. umbilicatum. The capsules of the latter are clearly indented at the tip.
Most characteristic of well-drained floodplain forests and rich mesic slope forests, but ranging frequently into drier and/or more infertile habitats; anomalous populations occasionally occur in dry, rocky woodlands and around outcrops. Frequent to locally common in the mountains and Piedmont; infrequent in the Coastal Plain.
