Freshwater tidal marshes in the Coastal Plain; calcareous fens and spring marshes, mafic fens, and wet meadows in the mountains; also in extraordinarily rare inland salt marshes developed in seasonally flooded basins over Mississipian-age salt deposits at Saltville, Smyth County. Locally frequent throughout the Ridge and Valley portion of the mountains; infrequent and local in the Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain.
