Oligohaline to mesohaline (rarely polyhaline) tidal marshes, brackish interdune swales and ponds, and waterfowl impoundments in maritime or brackish estuarine settings; also in extraordinarily rare inland salt marshes developed in seasonally flooded basins over Mississipian-age salt deposits at Saltville, Smyth County. Locally frequent in the maritime and lower estuarine zones of the Coastal Plain; disjunct to the sw. mountains at Saltville (Ridge and Valley province).
