Comments
Recent studies have demonstrated that taxa of this genus are morphologically, genetically, and phylogenetically distinct from Schoenoplectus and warrant generic status. Var. williamsii is a more northern segregate that differs from var. purshiana in the absence of perianth bristles (Shiels and Monfils 2012, Novon 22: 87-90).
Habitat
Fens, depression ponds, tidal shores, sandy and gravelly river shores and bars, wet meadows, ditches, impoundments, and other open, disturbed wetlands. Locally frequent in the Piedmont; infrequent in the mountains; rare in the Coastal Plain.
