Comments
The name Cenchrus spinifex has priority over Cenchrus incertus, IF it applies to our species. Ward (2010, Phytologia 92: 442-451) argued that the application was very uncertain, but Verloove and Sachex-Gullon (2012, Willdenowia 42(1): 67-75) disagreed. Following examination of the holotype by two taxonomists, including Wipff (one of the FNA authors), the taxonomic consensus now seems to be that "spinifex" is the correct name.
Habitat
Sandy fields, roadsides, sandhill clearings, lawns, and seasonally exposed, riverside sand bars. Infrequent but sometimes locally numerous in the s. and c. Coastal Plain; also documented from several counties in central and western Virginia.
Native Status
Native
