- Robust plants with inflorescences only partly to barely exserted may be found occasionally in the mountains. Such plants have been called Danthonia allenii Austin, included within D. spicata in FNA. The relationship between cleistogamy and phenotypic plasticity in these grasses warrants further study.

- Rocky, shallow, or compacted soils in dry-mesic to dry (rarely mesic) upland forests, woodlands, barrens, outcrops, clearings, old fields, pastures, roadsides, and other varied habitats. Common throughout.
