Var. variabilis, with short or no lemma awns and glabrous sheaths, is not formally recognized here. It occurs occasionally in Virginia, and is worthy of further study.
Habitat
Mesic to dry upland forests, shaded clearings and, occasionally, well-drained alluvial forests; most numerous in, but not restricted to, base-rich soils. Frequent in the mountains and inner Piedmont; infrequent in the outer Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain, where limited to calcareous, shell-rich slopes.
