Comments
This weedy, introduced perennial is distinguished by its numerous, small, densely crowded spikelets in a narrow, spikelike panicle. The common name refers to the frequent presence of smut fungus in the inflorescence. Sporobolus indicus very often grows in regularly mowed habitats; it is mainly detectable during periods when a lack of mowing allows it to put up inflorescences, and may therefore be more widespread and numerous than collection records indicate.
Habitat
Fields, roadsides, lawns, and waste ground. Common in the s. and c. Coastal Plain; infrequent in the s. and c. Piedmont; rare in the sw. mountains.
Native Status
Introduced
