Comments
Phytologia 10:376 (1964): Chrome ore piles, Newport News, Aug. 1959, C. Reed 45907, 45899. The Flora of Virginia, Flora of the Southeastern U.S., and Kartesz (2015) all treat this as Alysicarpus ovalifolius (Schumacher) J. Leonard, apparently based on the fact that it is the most common member of the genus in the southeastern US and was formerly lumped under A. vaginalis by many authorities. If we had reason to believe that Reed's specimens represent plants dispersed from elsewhere in the southeast, this assumption might be convincing; however, since they came from ore piles at an international port, they could have originated almost anywhere. Reed's plants may very well be A. ovalifolius, but until these specimens are re-examined and definitively determined, we are retaining the name A. vaginalis, as originally determined.
