Plants with more diffuse inflorescences and smaller heads are sometimes recognized as var. beyrichii (Fischer & Meyer) A. Gray. It usually occurs in more xeric sites than var. strigosus. The effects of environment vs. genetics needs investigation.

Dry-mesic to dry upland forests, woodlands, barrens, clearings, fields, roadsides, and other disturbed habitats; more numerous in ruderal habitats than natural ones. Common throughout.
