Comments
Plants from high-elevation forests in the Mount Rogers area of the Southern Blue Ridge will key to E. maculatum var. maculatum based primarily on number of florets per head, but have a less flattened corymb and do not fit "classic" E. maculatum in all characters. In addition, they inhabit acidic upland soils and habitats very different from those of the Ridge and Valley representatives in calcareous fens and wet meadows. Detailed studies are needed to determine the proper taxonomic disposition of these plants.
Habitat
Calcareous fens and spring marshes, wet meadows, and streambanks. Rare in the mountains (primarily Ridge and Valley province) and northern Piedmont.
Native Status
Native
