This species has been recorded from many counties. It rarely persists at a given site but appears repeatedly as a spontaneous waif. The map of collected specimens here is certainly incomplete since this species could probably be found in every county.
Habitat
Much cultivated for ornament and wildlife, with its seeds also widely used at bird feeders. Frequently spontaneous in the vicinity of plantings and spilled seed, and occasionally on roasides and waste ground. Populations are ephemeral, rarely lasting more than a year or two.
