Comments
Distinguished from lookalike species in the genus Helianthus by its fertile ray florets. Plants approaching the more western Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra (Dunal) Fernald have been collected in Virginia, but don't seem to match it in all respects. This issue may deserve more investigation.
Habitat
Open forests, woodlands, clearings, meadows, and roadsides. Frequent to common in the mountains; infrequent in the Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain.
