- Dunes and upper beaches; usually on or behind unstable foredunes. Rare, Coastal Plain; restricted almost entirely to dune habitats in the cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Virginia Beach, but with a surprising occurrence in northern Accomack County (Assateague Island). The Accomack occurrence consists of a single shrub and seems unquestionably native based on habitat and context.
