Northern and southern taxa corresponding to var. elatior and var. paniculata, respectively (see Synonymy above), are sometimes recognized but are controversial. The best approach may be to include all plants in a single variable species, as is done in FNA, Vol. 21 and which we are following here, at least for the time being.
Habitat
A ubiquitous native weed of fields, pastures, roadsides, gardens, and other open, disturbed habitats; also in dry-mesic to dry forests, woodlands, clearings, and barrens, especially on mafic rocks and shale. Common throughout.
