In Virginia this species appears to be a rather strict magnesiophile, almost exclusively associated with soils of consistently high magnesium and widely variable calcium content.
Habitat
Dry, open forests, woodlands, barrens, and clearings over dolostone and mafic or ultramafic rocks. Infrequent in the mountains (Ridge and Valley province) and s. Piedmont but may be numerous where found.
