Comments
Var. odorata, representing plants up to 10 dm tall with relatively small heads, ranges from Virginia to Texas, mostly on the Coastal Plain. Plants with larger heads but a shorter stature (usually > 6 dm) occur from e. NC to MA along the coast and have been distinguished as var. succulenta (Fern.) Cronq. However, because the differential characters overlap and Virginia is in the zone where the ranges overlap, the distinction is not always clear-cut in our area.
Habitat
Tidal oligohaline to mesohaline (rarely freshwater) marshes, tidal swamps, high-energy tidal shores, maritime swamps, brackish interdune swales and ponds; rarely in impoundments inland. Locally common in the estuarine and maritime zones of the Coastal Plain; rare inland in the Coastal Plain and outer Piedmont.
Native Status
Native
