Comments
A Southern Appalachian endemic, reaching the northern limit of its range on Buffalo Mountain, Floyd Co., Va. A similar Southern Appalachian species, Nabalus cylindricus Small could also be present and should be sought in the Balsam Mountains area of Virginia.

In 2012, we felt that the original molecular work suggesting that Prenanthes as traditionally circumscribed is polyphyletic was old and preliminary, and that additional studies including North American taxa were needed to confirm the relationships of Prenanthes and recognition of Nabalus at the genus level. More recently, additional studies have definitively supported the inclusion of North American Prenanthes in Nabalus. See Schilling et al. (2015, Phytoneuron 2015-19: 1–8).
Habitat
Northern red oak forests, northern hardwood forests, high-elevation cove forests, spruce-fir forests, balds, and high-elevation outcrop barrens. Restricted to higher elevations (mostly above 1070 m [3500 ft]) of the Southern Blue Ridge, especially in the Balsam Mountains, where it is frequent.
Native Status
Native
