Comments
In 2012, we felt that the original molecular work suggesting that Prenanthes as traditionally circumscribed is polyphyletic was old and preliminary, and that additional studies including North American taxa were needed to confirm the relationships of Prenanthes and recognition of Nabalus at the genus level. More recently, additional studies have definitively supported the inclusion of North American Prenanthes in Nabalus. See Schilling et al. (2015, Phytoneuron 2015-19: 1–8).

Mesic to dry upland forests, forest borders, and clearings. Frequent to common in the mountains; infrequent in the Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain.
