- Comments
- Two well-marked members of the Silphium compositum group occur in Virginia. Flora of the Southeastern U.S. (Weakley et al. 2023) treats them as species (see Synonyms), but most other sources consider them varieties or lump them entirely (e.g., FNA). Silphium compositum var. reniforme differs from var. compositum by having unlobed leaves and minor differences in achene length. Its in-state distribution is concentrated in the inner s. Piedmont and southern mountain shale districts. For the time being, we are following the traditional varietal treatment pending future phylogenetic studies that can definitively clarify the appropriate rank for these taxa.
- Habitat
- Dry open forests, woodlands, shale barrens, clearings, and road banks. This var. appears to be concentrated in the inner part of the southern Piedmont and west-central Ridge and Valley region. It is locally frequent in dry shale landscapes of Alleghany and Bath Counties, infrequent elsewhere.
