- See Comments under map of Solidago rugosa sensu lato and S. rugosa var. aspera. Map very incomplete at present. Var. rugosa is more northern in distribution than the other vars. but is sympatric with var. aspera in the Mid-Atlantic states. Included in this map are specimens from alluvial habitats in six counties of south-central Virginia that have completely glabrous stems below the inflorescence. A series of these specimens was examined by Bruce A. Sorrie, who determined that they are consistent with other specimens of S. rugosa var. rugosa at NCU. Note, however, that the glabrous stems will prevent them from keying cleanly. Stem pubescence is a critical diagnostic character for all the S. rugosa vars. (except var. sphagnophila, now S. aestivalis) in virtually all keys, yet other characters clearly separate the central Virginia material from glabrous-stemmed members of Solidago Sect. Venosae (S. aestivalis, S. latissimifolia, S. ulmifolia var. ulmifolia). Further study may be needed.

- Floodplain forests, bogs, fens, seeps, mesic upland forests, clearings, old fields, meadows, and balds. In Virginia, var. rugosa is likely to be most common in the mountains and northern Piedmont, but see Comments.
