Bottomland forests, alluvial swamps, tidal swamps, tidal freshwater marshes, depression swamps, wet to fairly dry clearings, old fields, meadows, and roadsides. Frequent to common in the Coastal Plain, c. and n. Piedmont, and nw. mountains; apparently infrequent to rare elsewhere.
