Repeated, preferential browsing by White-tailed Deer has contributed to sharp declines in populations of this already naturally scarce shrub; in many areas, full-grown plants are rarely seen, and the species is reduced to small, vegetative root sprouts.
Habitat
Northern hardwood forests, Northern Red Oak forests, montane oak forests, and seepage swamps at middle to high elevations. Rare in the mountains, but formerly frequent in a few areas.
