The Virginia collection represents the sole record of this species as a North American introduction. It is a deciduous shrub that is infrequently grown for ornament and medicinal properties. The genus Grewia is largely tropical and subtropical.

Escaped to "weedy, bushy bank of farm road 0.1 mi. NW of planted Grewia shrubs at entrance to old residence" (Charles E. Stevens, s.n., at FARM).
