Thought to be of hybrid origin, combining the characters of H. americana and H. pubescens, but exhibiting increased variability suggesting genetic seggregation after hybridization [Wells (1984), Syst. Bot. Monogr. 3].

This species is a broadly Central Appalachian endemic.
Habitat
Calcareous rocky forests and rock outcrops, most numerous in carbonate-rock areas. Infrequent in mountains, rare in n. and w. Piedmont.
