The varietal designation is not needed if one treats var. harperi (Small) C.M. Rogers as a species, as Flora of the Southeastern U.S. does; FSUS states that it is "probably distinct .... at the species level .... but needs additional study."
Habitat
Dry rocky woodlands and barrens over limestone, dolostone, or, rarely, metabasalt, calcareous sandstone, and calcareous shale; occasionally in dry, rocky pastures and clearings in limestone/dolostone areas. Infrequent in the mountains.
