Comments
Infraspecific taxa are not formally recognized here until their validity is established. Our plants would be var. perennis if one accepts var. gracilis (Nuttall) Chapman of longleaf pine sandhills in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. However, Flora of the Southeastern States (Weakley et al. 2023) notes that differences between this and var. perennis may be only clinal.
Habitat
Dry, sandy, open forests, woodlands, clearings, and roadsides; associated almost exclusively with sandy, nutrient-poor soils. Infrequent to locally common throughout; apparently absent from sw. Virginia.
Native Status
Native
