The concept of P. australis in Atlas lll (essentially reproduced here) appears to be broader than that envisioned by Pennell (and probably Small also); critical review is needed. Our plants may be recognized as ssp. australis.
Habitat
Sandhill woodlands, dry sandy clearings and roadsides. Rare in the s. and c. inner Coastal Plain and perhaps the adjacent outer Piedmont.
