Often listed as a mid-Appalachian shale barren endemic, however; it more typically occurs in shaly woods and roadsides in the absence of true endemics. Also found on metasiltstone/phyllitic substrates of the Central Blue Ridge. Endemic to a relatively small area in western Virginia and eastern West Virginia.
Habitat
Dry open forests, woodlands, forest edges, clearings, and road banks on shale (Ridge and Valley) and metasiltstone (Blue Ridge). Rare in the mountains.
