Ssp. triflora (Michx.) Wherry with wider, short-acuminate leaves and sterile shoots well-developed, is sometimes distinguished from ssp. glaberrima. Researchers studying herbarium specimens from Virginia have not chosen to recognize varieties. See Comments under map of P. carolina.
Habitat
Floodplain forests, riverbanks and bars, wet meadows, and disturbed alluvial soil. Infrequent in the mountains and Piedmont; rare in the inner Coastal Plain; mostly in the southern half of the state.
