Since 1982, this species has been called Phlox latifolia Michaux by most workers due to a typification issue. Hopefully, the issue is now settled and we can retain the name -- Phlox ovata L. -- by which this species was known for over 200 years! See Castanea 76(1):116-117 (2011).
Habitat
Mesic to more typically dry forests, woodlands, and clearings; occasionally on shale barrens; occurs in both acidic and calcareous soils. Frequent in the mountains (except in both far sw. and far nw. Virginia), infrequent in the inner, s. and c. Piedmont.
