- Flora of the Southeastern U.S. (Weakley et al. 2023) recognizes eight subspecies of Phlox pilosa, of which only ssp. pilosa is known from Virginia.
- Habitat
- Dry to less often mesic open forests, clearings, and road banks; often in rocky or clay hardpan soils. Rare in mountains, Piedmont, and inner Coastal Plain.
