Pilea fontana is very similar to the much more common Pilea pumila, but can be distinguished by its black or dark purple, pebbled achenes (vs. green to light brown and smooth-textured achenes in P. pumila). It is also more restricted to base-rich or calcareous soils than its widely distributed congener.
Habitat
Alluvial swamps, tidal swamps, rich floodplain forests, freshwater tidal marshes, rich seepage swamps, seasonally flooded impoundments, sand bars, calcareous fens, and rich mesic forests, particularly in Coastal Plain shell-marl ravines. Infrequent to locally common in the Coastal Plain; rare in the Piedmont and mountains.
