Habitat
Mesic to dry forests; tolerant of a range of substrate chemistries, occurring on both extremely acidic and strongly calcareous soils. Common in the sw. mountains; frequent in the far sw. Piedmont; rare elsewhere. Often heavily browsed by deer.
