Whether North American plants should be treated as a separate species or as a subspecies of European Samolus valerandi seems debatable. However, for the sake of consistency with FOV and Flora of the Southeastern U.S., we treat them as separate species here.
Habitat
Tidal freshwater and oligohaline marshes, tidal swamps, alluvial swamps, floodplain sloughs and pools, maritime swamps, interdune swales, calcareous seepage swamps, rocky and sandy riverside bars. Frequent in the Coastal Plain; infrequent in the Piedmont and mountains.
