Fens, seeps, and seepage swamps over mafic (amphibolite, metabasalt) or ultramafic rocks. Rare, mountains and sw. Piedmont; known from the Glades region of the Southern Blue Ridge (Grayson County), the vicinity of Big Meadows on the Northern Blue Ridge (Shenandoah National Park, Madison and Page counties), and Grassy Hill (Franklin County).
