The map of this species probably includes some records of Viola vittata in southeastern Virginia. Until recently, the former has been widely treated as a var. of V. lanceolata. Their treatment as separate species follows Ballard, H.E., J.T. Kartesz, and M. Nishino. 2023. A taxonomic treatment of the Violets (Violaceae) of the northeastern United States and adjacent Canada. Habitat
Bogs, depression swamps and ponds, interdune swales and ponds, wet clearings, and riverside pools. Infrequent in the Coastal Plain and mountains; rare in the Piedmont; may be numerous where found.
