- Viola pedata ssp. pedata occurs nearly state-wide in dry habitats. Ballard recently elevated a form described by Fernald to subspecies status, V. pedata ssp. cuneatiloba. Differing in leaf morphology and confined to shale barrens of the Ridge and Valley region, ssp. cuneatiloba has a narrow range from Pennsylvania and New Jersey to Virginia and West Virginia. Since these subspecies have never been recognized in Virginia floristic studies, the map for ssp. pedata may contain some records for ssp. cuneatiloba. - Dry rocky or sandy forests, woodlands, barrens, clearings, and road banks. Frequent to common in the mountains, Piedmont, and inner Coastal Plain; rare in the outer Coastal Plain.
