Nomenclature follows Ballard, H.E., J.T. Kartesz, and M. Nishino. 2023. A taxonomic treatment of the Violets (Violaceae) of the northeastern United States and adjacent Canada. Jour. Torrey Bot. Soc. 150(1): 3-266.
Habitat
Rich, well-drained floodplain forests, river-slope forests, and rich cove forests, typically on fertile soils weathered or deposited from mafic or calcareous substrates. Frequent in the mountains (locally common in some areas), infrequent in the Piedmont, rare in the Coastal Plain. This species and Viola eriocarpa grow in similar habitats, and often together, but V. pubescens is more restricted to the richest sites and is less common overall.
