Comments
All Virginia material is referrable to Boltonia asteroides (L.) L'Her var. glastifolia (Hill) Fernald. Most recent taxonomic treatments of the genus have not recognized this variety, but it appears to be distinctive from B. asteroides (L.) L'Her var. asteroides, which is apparently restricted to the Susquehanna River valley and environs in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Plants of var. glastifolia are stoloniferous (vs. not in var. asteroides), have firm leaves narrowed to petiolar bases (vs. flexuous leaves not strongly narrowed to the base in var. asteroides), and tend to be taller and often wand-like (vs. shorter and more diffusely branched in var. asteroides).
Habitat
Freshwater to oligohaline, lunar- or wind-tidal marshes. Known from the intertidal zone on the Chickahominy River in the c. Coastal Plain; more numerous in the oligohaline wind-tidal marshes of the Embayed Region in far se. Virginia (Northwest and North Landing rivers and Back Bay).
Native Status
Native
