Comments
Two intergrading varieties are sometimes recognized, var. lasiocarpus being the western counterpart and distinguished by having densely pubescent capsules and leaves pubescent on the upper surface. Occasional plants in our area have varying degrees of pubescence on the upper surface like var. lasiocarpus, but are otherwise like var. moscheutos (glabrous capsules, etc.). These plants have sometimes been called var. incanus. None of these segregates are formally recognized here.
Habitat
Tidal freshwater and oligohaline marshes, tidal swamps, salt scrub, alluvial swamps, floodplain pools and ponds, maritime swamps, interdune ponds and swales, river shores and bars, calcareous marshes, and inland salt marshes; also in impoundments, ditches, and other disturbed wetlands. Common in the Coastal Plain; frequent in the Piedmont; infrequent in the mountains.
Native Status
