- Comments
- New subsp. described in Novon 18:192-198 (2008). The predominant subspecies in the midwestern U.S., believed to be only in mountainous areas in the eastern states, though the Fairfax station is on the Piedmont. Most Virginia specimens have not been determined to subspecies.
- Habitat
- Virginia habitats and distribution of this recently described taxon are uncertain, as most Virginia specimens have not been identified to subspecies. The four confirmed specimens are from rocky woodlands, streambanks, and clearings in the mountains and Piedmont. This is probably by far the less common of the two subspecies, but further field and herbarium studies are needed.
