Collected as a waif in Bedford County. This South American weed has been introduced in states both north and south of Virginia.
In 2013, USDA-APHIS did a risk assessment to help determine if Solanum sisymbriifolium should be declared a noxious weed. It is planted widely as a trap plant where potatoes are grown to attract the pale potato cyst nematode.
