- Although this species and Hypericum stragulum were lumped in most older Virginia floristic studies, more recent collections and reviews of Virginia herbarium material have made it possible to produce robust maps for each species. Herbarium specimens are commonly top-snatched, and can be difficult to determine. However, in the field, H. hypericoides can be readily distinguished from H. stragulum by its growth habit as an upright, single-stemmed shrub (vs. a matted, decumbent gestalt, with multiple prostrate stems arising from the rootstock in ssp. multicaule).
- Habitat
- In varied, damp to dry forests, damp flatwoods, wetter parts of sandhill woodlands, well-drained acidic bottomlands, and clearings. Common in the Coastal Plain; infrequent in the outer Piedmont.
