The map includes records for three varieties: var. digitalis, var. floridana (Bailey) Naczi & Bryson, and var. macropoda Fernald. Virginia herbarium specimens of Carex digitalis generally have not been determined to the varietal level, and the individual varietal maps are incomplete or skeletal at present.
Habitat
The species occurs in a range of mesic to dry upland forests from the lowest elevations to about 1525 m (5000 ft). It is is common statewide, but the status of the three vars. has not been fully determined. Var. digitalis appears to be widespread in the mountains and Piedmont; var. floridana is probably ± restricted to the Coastal Plain; and var. macropoda is probably restricted to lower elevations, perhaps primarily or exclusively east of the mountains.
