Dry, open or partially forested habitats. Apparently, often associated with sandy soils of the Coastal Plain in other parts of its range. Perhaps overlooked in eastern Virginia. In the uplands and mountains, often occupying rocky ground where associated with the lichen genus Cladonia under pines, red cedar, and dry oak forests.
