- Typically on dry, exposed or thinly shaded outcrops and boulders; occasionally on moist rocks or rocky soil. Not particular about rock type, occurring on the full range of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous substrates. Widespread and common in suitable habitats of the mountains and Piedmont.
