Habitat
On dry, thinly shaded to exposed, shaley or sandy soil, shale barrens, and outcrops of shale, sandstone, amphibolite, and metabasalt. Scattered collections in the mountains, with a heavy concentration in the west-central counties with numerous shale barrens. The source of the Coastal Plain (Isle of Wight Co.) record in Breil's unpublished atlas is unknown and perhaps questionable.
