Various habitats (soil, humus, rocks, wood) in spruce, spruce-fir, and northern hardwood forests at high elevations in the mountains, where common and characteristic; more scattered in cool, sheltered habitats at lower elevations of the mountains. In the Piedmont and Coastal Plain, this liverwort occurs very locally on steep, often seeping, north-facing bluffs and in bogs.
